Apple Introduces Monthly App Store subscription model with 12-Month Commitment .

Apple launches a new App Store subscription model allowing users to pay monthly while committing to a 12-month plan. Learn how it works, benefits, and rollout details.

In a significant shift to its subscription ecosystem, Apple has unveiled a new App Store subscription model that blends affordability with long-term commitment. The company is introducing “monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment,” allowing users to pay for annual plans in smaller monthly instalments instead of a single upfront payment.

A Middle Ground Between Monthly and Annual Plans

Until now, most apps on the App Store followed a familiar pricing structure:

    • A monthly plan with higher recurring costs
    • An annual plan offering discounts but requiring full upfront payment

Apple’s new model sits neatly between these two. Users can now enjoy the discounted pricing of yearly subscriptions without the burden of paying the full amount at once. For example, instead of paying $50 upfront for a yearly plan, users may now pay around $4.99 per month over 12 months—making subscriptions psychologically and financially easier to commit to.

    Commitment and Cancellation Policy

Despite the monthly billing, the subscription remains a 12-month contractual commitment. Users can cancel at any time, but the cancellation will only stop the subscription from renewing after the current term ends. This means users are still required to complete all remaining monthly payments within the agreed period. Apple will provide detailed subscription tracking within account settings, including:

    • Payment history
    • Remaining instalments
    • Renewal timelines

Users will also receive reminder emails and optional push notifications before renewals. Push notifications will alert users before renewals.

    Strategic Move for Growth

The new payment model is expected to benefit both users and app developers. Users gain affordability and flexibility without large upfront costs . Developers benefit from improved subscriber retention and predictable revenue streams. The approach mirrors strategies already used by industries such as streaming services, telecom providers, and fitness memberships.

    Rollout Details

Apple confirmed that developers can begin testing this feature through App Store Connect and Xcode. The feature is scheduled for a global rollout in May 2026, alongside updates to Apple’s operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS.However, the company noted that the feature will not be available initially in the United States and Singapore.
